Pharmacognosy of Acacia

                                                            Acacia

Synonyms:
 Gum Arabic, Gum acacia, Babul and Gondu.
Biological source:
 It consists of the dried gummy exudation obtained from the stem and branches of   Acacia arabica Wild. (Acacia Senegal)
Family: Leguminosae.
Geographical source:
 It is found in Sudan, India, Morocco, Sri Lanka and   Africa.
Physical Characters:
 i. Form: Rounded ovoid tears.
 ii. Size: Variable.
 iii. Colour: Colourless to slight yellowish tint.
 iv. Fracture: Brittle.
 v. Fracture surface: Glossy.
 vi. Odour: Odourless.
 vii. Taste: Bland and mucilaginous.
Chemical constituents:
 i. Polysaccharide Arabin (Mixture of calcium, magnesium and potassium salts of   arabic acid).
 ii. Arabic acid on hydrolysis gives D-galactose, L-arabinose, L-rhamnose and D-   glucoronic acid.
 iii. Also contain enzyme oxidase and peroxidase.
Chemical tests:
 1. Solubility: Soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol.
 2. A hot aqueous solution of the gum is acidic.
 3. Test for reducing sugar: Boil a solution of gum in dilute HCl. Make the resulting   solution alkaline by adding a few ml of caustic soda. When Fehling’s solution is added to the resulting solution and heated, a red precipitate of cuprous oxide is formed   indicating the liberation of reducing sugars.
 4. A 10% aqueous solution of gum gives with dilute solution of lead sub acetate white   precipitate.
 5. To a boil solution of gum in dilute HCl, barium chloride solution is added when a   white precipitate of barium sulphate is not obtained (Distinction from agar).
 6. On adding iodine solution to an aqueous solution of gum, no blue or brown   coloration is obtained (absence of starch and dextrin).
 7. On adding ferric chloride solution to a aqueous solution of the gum, no bluish black colour is produced indicating the absence of tannins.
Uses:
 1. Demulcent.
 2. Emulsifying agent.
 3. Suspending agent.
 4. Binding agent.
 5. Used in inflammation of intestinal mucosa.
 6. Used to cover inflamed surface such as bums, sore nipples, etc.
 7. Used in the manufacture of adhesive and ink.
